ARC (Moment, Pomona, Kiss) presents the English-language world premiere of DISSIDENTS, written by Quebecois playwright Philippe Ducros, in a new translation by ARC Artistic Producer Christopher Stanton. Tickets for all performances are Pay-What-You-Can-Afford.
Isolated behind a glass partition a man undergoes an interrogation intending to break his silence, extract a confession, and force him to justify his very own existence. Instead, he chooses to dissent. The enemy has become virtual, the world has overdosed on progress, and the crash could be catastrophic. DISSIDENTS questions civic protest, activism and disobedience in a world without privacy, facts and accountability.
The cast of DISSIDENTS features ARC Resident Artists: Aviva Armour-Ostroff (Pomona / Dora nomination for Best Ensemble; VideoCabarets The Great War / Dora Award for Best Ensemble; producer/co-director of the film adaptation of The Drawer Boy); Carlos González-Vío (Kiss, Pomona / ARC; Blood Weddings, The Death of the King, Hallaj / Modern Times Stage Company; Crave / Nightwood Theatre); and Christopher Stanton (Title and Deed / Tarragon Workspace; Moment, Pomona* / ARC; 13-time Dora nominee across disciplines, two-time winner for director* and actor). Stanton also co-directs with ARC Resident Artist and emerging director Tamara Vuckovic (Suburban Motel / directorial debut; recipient of Theatre Ontarios Professional Theatre Training Program Grant).
Philippe Ducros is a writer, director and actor. His plays and novels, which have been produced and published in Quebec, France and Africa, are inspired by his travel experiences in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. DISSIDENTS premiered in Montreal (2012) and was a finalist for both the Michel Tremblay and the Governor Generals Awards. ARC is a multi-award-wining group of diverse and multi-disciplined artists who take a rigourous, energetic, socially active, and highly collaborative approach in creating and presenting contemporary stories and international works that have rarely if ever been staged in Canada.
Fear is ammunition. Democracy is a lie. Silence is acquiescence.
