Anyone who's ever prayed for a film to drive a wedge in outdated Hollywood portrayals of womenand particularly of African-American women in a white-dominated societywill be as liberated by A Different Image, as the film's protagonist Alana builds a self-image that defies men's ideas of pursuit. Striking at cultural barriers to women's expression through an uplifting portrait of a lady, A Different Image quietly raises the specter of any individual's ability to bust out of cultural expectations.
Also showing are Monona Wali's Grey Area, which collages the philosophies of a poor community and of a "socially responsible" corporation; Zeinabu Irene Davis's Cycles and Barbara McCullough's Water Ritual #1: An Urban Rite of Purification.
WATER RITUAL #1: AN URBAN RITE OF PURIFICATION is preservation funded with a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation's Avant-Garde Masters Grant Program funded by The Film Foundation.
Tonight's program is part of our month-long series L.A. Rebellion. Read More >>
