Richard II - GRAY Cast
King Richard II, only 10 years old when he ascended the English throne then deposed 22 years later, was imprisoned and murdered without trial at the age of 33. Richard suffered his fate due in part to his own immaturity, wasteful spending habits, poor choice in friends, and detachment from his country. Does a fascinating parallel exist between what we think of as kingly Richard and many so-called low young incarcerated young men serving time in prison today? The Trial of Richard II adapted from Shakespeares Richard II and its prequel Thomas of Woodstock, is the posthumous courtroom trial (albeit in the Underworld) Richard was never given in life. Should he have been imprisoned or was Richard too young to fully understand the consequences of his actions? Lumina is proud to have collaborated with *Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop, on this, drawing on their insight, experiences, and poetry, to shape a history play still relevant to our time. You, the audience, will get to decide the outcome of Richards trial.
* Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop uses books, creative writing, and peer support to awaken DC youth incarcerated as adults to their own potential.
