SongBird North - Where Writers Sing and Tell (Formerly "Bluebird North"!)
The Songwriters Association of Canada is celebrating it's 23rd year of running Bluebird North in Vancouver. This popular bi-monthly concert series celebrates songwriting in a warm, engaging theatre setting. Due to copyright issues the name had to be changed to SongBird North.
April's show features:
Featuring KIM BEGGS (Whitehorse) IVAN BOUDREAU (Maple Ridge) BLAIR PACKHAM (Toronto) LARISSA TANDY (Australia/Nashville/Vancouver) Host: SHARI ULRICH (Vancouver)
From Nova Scotia to Bowen Island, Toronto to the Yukon (with a detour to rural Australia) the songwriters featured in the upcoming edition of SongBird North hail from all corners of the world. Variety is par for the course with Vancouvers longest-running songwriters showcase, where listeners can expect to discover talented artists who are new to them, and hear familiar voices in a different way. Its a unique live music experience: a warm, unplugged vibe, varied and inspiring performances, great stories, and of course, superlative song-writing

******* BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their own original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. The series has toured nationally, and has established itself in several other Canadian cities. Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city. www.songwriters.ca
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS April 24, 2018
KIM BEGGS Sincere, vulnerable, clear-eyed and tough, Yukon's Kim Beggs combines a sweet old-time roots/country sound with dark tales of Northern life. She has toured with Buffy Saint Marie, Chris Jagger and more. Kim has six Western Canadian Music Award nominations (including three for Roots Solo Albums of the Year, for her last three solo albums) and three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations to her name. She is also an Independent Music Award nominee for her latest album, Said Little Sparrow (released in October 2017), and is currently a semi-finalist in the Canadian Songwriting Competition for Adult Contemporary song of the year, for her song Hurts the Worst. Kim recently participated in the Banff Centres Singer Songwriter Residency along with many other heavy-hitters from across Canada, and she has an entire album of new songs ready to be released this year. www.kimbeggs.com
IVAN BOUDREAU Ivan Boudreau has been a professional musician/songwriter and wandering minstrel for over 45 years. He has deep roots in Nova Scotia, and spent some of his younger years in Boston and Toronto, but he now calls BC home. Ivans driving passion is stories and songs that are honest and heartfelt, and his well-crafted songs are sensitive, thought provoking and unique, with hauntingly beautiful melodies that take his listeners on an emotional musical journey. He produces a monthly songwriters showcase called SongStage in two different Lower Mainland venues - The Gallery Bistro in Port Moody and the ACT Arts Centre in Maple Ridge offering songwriters a listening environment to showcase their work. http://www.ivanboudreau.com/
LARISSA TANDY Hailing from rural Australia, Larissa came up from the underground of Melbournes world class music scene, mining her difficult life for potent stories and spinning them into songs that made their way onto radio in America, the UK, and Canada where the CBC ordained them as songs you need to hear. Filtering the urgent poetry of Patti Smith and the untamed cool of Liz Phair, Tandy is carving her own path in the world of modern americana. With blazing showcases at Americanafest and Folk Alliance, her momentum continues to gather. Her acclaimed debut The Grip spent 4 months in the US Americana charts and reached number 2 in Canada. She recently made the move to Music City Nashville as the recipient of the prestigious Nashville Songwriter Residency.
BLAIR PACKHAM You never know what will come out of Blair Packhams mouth. Could be a song, and maybe a story about where that song came from. Sometimes his stories are funny, even if the songs are heartbreaking. Always looking for a human connection, Blair treasures his time on stage, whether solo or with his acoustic trio, The Impossible Dream. When he first started writing songs at age 17, Steve Goodman, John Prine, Elvis Costello, and the Beatles were inspirations, and Blair wore those influences proudly, forming a group called The Jitters in the early 1980s. The Jitters had hit records (Last of the Red Hot Fools; Closer Every Day"), were Juno Award-nominated, and won a Toronto Music Award. Currently, Blair is planning his fourth full-length recording for release in the fall of 2018. http://blairpackham.com/
SHARI ULRICH (Host / Producer) Shari's 45-year career from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist has led to 23 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two awards, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 21 years, both locally and nationally. www.shariulrich.com
