The idea of celebrating diversity and culture is not something new to San Antonio. We are a city that is rich with history and culture. Expressing and taking ownership of your unique niche in this world is absolutely something worth holding on to. Too often however we get caught up in the specifics of what characteristics set us apart. Those Labels that have long defined us are also the very things that tend to pinion-hole us into one thing or another. Rather than living in a colorful world of diversity, the very labels that have helped us understand who we are can, also, segregate us into living in a world that looks much more grey. Love Not Labels was created with the idea that no matter who you are, who you love and individual creative expression are what make us all human. We want to celebrate our diversity from the perspective of what makes us all alike, through a lens of love.
Love Not Labels is an annual event that seeks to bring together a diverse group of creative people from all artistic backgrounds in a family friendly environment to unite local artists, celebrate champions for love in our community, and benefit local charities at the same time. It is a day of music, art, performance, food, crafts, and community. Each year the proceeds will benefit a different group of local non-profit organizations that also hold the values of Love Not Labels. In its' inaugural year, Love Not Labels will bring together three very important LGBTQA local non profits to share in the spotlight; The Center (www.pridecentersa.org), Fiesta Youth (www.fiesta-youth.org), Thrive Youth Center (www.thriveyouthcenter.com) and Woodlawn Pointe. This variety show fundraiser will take place in the newly renovated Woodlawn Pointe auditorium On June 9th from 2-10pm.
This event, organized by board member Misha Ortiz, will feature a variety of creatives such as artists, burlesque performers, spoken word, artisan vendors, drag kings, drag queens, dance troupes, theater arts, djs and live local music. All proceeds collected thru out the night will directly benefit all 3 non profits. There is a $5 minimum suggested donation to attend. Please be advised that some of the acts after 8pm may be deemed inappropriate for young children so we ask that parents be aware. Our main goal is to bring many different locals together in the hopes of bridging the gaps that exist within our community and work towards building a stronger future.
San Antonio is home to a diverse group of talented artists, craftspeople, performers, and creative individuals. The Love Not Labels showcase and Woodlawn Pointe offer individuals and groups alike a place to express their unique gifts while benefiting a good cause. We want to create a space that helps to bring exposure to some of the most diverse arts that exist in our city. So join is in celebrating the diversity of arts In San Antonio.
