Dixit Dominus - The Voice of Order over Chaos
Crescendos Baroque Oratorio Concert will feature two settings of the Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110) by two of the most famous composers of that era: Handel and Vivaldi.
George Frideric Handels Dixit Dominus HWV 232 is scored for five-voice chorus, soloists, and chamber orchestra. It was written in 1707 for an unknown occasion in Rome, when the composer was only 22 years old. The work shows his talent to use the music to underline the rhetorical drama, and is basically a concerto for choir and orchestra.
Antonio Vivaldis Dixit Dominus RV 807 for four-voice chorus, soloists and chamber orchestra was re-discovered only in 2005; it was long misattributed to Baldassare Galuppi. This oratorio is an entirely original composition of outstanding musical quality that dates from the composers late period. It includes a majestic trumpet part alongside the string and woodwind orchestra.
The program will also include a couple of vocal works of Galuppi, who featured the trumpet alongside the voices frequently: the motet Jesu Corona Virgo for chorus and chamber orchestra and Alla tromba della fama for countertenor solo, trumpet and chamber orchestra.
Performers are Crescendo Chorus, and soloists Michele Kennedy soprano I, Jordan Rose Lee and Jennifer Tyo soprano II, world renowned countertenor Nicholas Tamagna, David Vanderwal tenor, and Enrico Lagasca bass-baritone from New York City, with a Period Instrument Orchestra (strings and woodwinds) and natural trumpet player Chris Belluscio from Boston, directed by Christine Gevert.
The concert will be repeated on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 4 pm at Trinity Lime Rock, Lakeville, CT (VivaldiHandel6.bpt.me)
