1ST PLAY - HARRIET TUBMAN: DEFENDER
This play depicts the first half of Harriet Tubman's life. The performance will take you on a journey from her life as a child born into slavery, coming of age in slavery at the age of twenty, and of her daring escape to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
Harriet's harsh treatment as a child, and seeing her sisters sold off, left an indelible scar in her mind that compelled her to resist slavery in the face of harsh and debilitating punishment. We see her as an adolescent develop a firebrand persona befitting the name "Defender." It is her early experiences in childhood that are the catalyst of her quest to escape the burdens of slavery. She travels on the Underground Railroad to Philadelphia, the land of freedom only to learn her real purpose in life.
Through narrative, song, and visual projections, we will experience both the pain and elation of being free from the binds of slavery. We see Harriet's indomitable spirit bolstered by an unyielding faith in God, and how she overcame challenges of not being able to read or write to accomplish what many slaves thought to be an impossible task.
