Special pre-reunion show screening of Do U Want It?
In January of 2013, shortly after Papa Grows Funk announced their plans to take a hiatus, production began on a feature-length documentary about the band. The movie, Do U Want It? was completed in 2017 and has toured the film festival circuit for nearly a year winning over audiences in cities around the country. In fact, the film has won Audience Award at the New Orleans Film Festival and SF IndieFest.
The band has not played a show together since their final concert at Tipitina's on June 29, 2013. But to the joy of their beloved fan base, Papa Grows Funk is playing a reunion concert on May 7, 2018 at Tipitina's. The movie will screen just before the show, on the same day. You can come watch the movie, get a look at never-before-seen footage, feel the intimacy of the story and learn the truth to what went down, and get amped up to see the band for yourself later the same night. This movie is not available to the public yet, and this is a special screening created especially with the Jazz Fest community in mind. It will truly be a one-of-a-kind night.
Q&A with the Directors immediately to follow the screening.
Here's what people have said about the film:
"This documentary, in all truthfulness, is the story of most of our lives as New Orleans musicians over the last fifty years. This movie represents not just this band but our collective reality." - George Porter Jr.
Just like John Gros and the music of Papa Grows Funk itself, the film explodes with the life, rhythm, and soul of New Orleans. - Quint Davis, Producer and Director, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
"A gem of a documentary that cuts to the heart of what it means to make it big as a band - and the unseen personal sacrifices required."
"This is way more than a film about a band. It explores some of the larger questions facing us all: how do you want to live your life? What is success?"
"One of the best music documentaries I've ever seen."
