The Steep Canyon Rangers With OUT IN THE OPEN, The Steep Canyon Rangers latest release, the band affirms their place as one of the most versatile bands in contemporary American music. The GRAMMY® Award-winning sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, and folk rock to create something original.
OUT IN THE OPEN is the Rangers bravest excursion thus far, transcending bluegrass while also getting closest to the genres true form thanks to 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Joe Henrys traditional approach toward recording. The band soon discovered that their producer along with engineer/mixer Jason Richmond intended to record all six members singing and playing in a room with no overdubs. The organic process allowed SCR to work fast, tracking a dozen songs in just three-and-a-half days. OUT IN THE OPEN is an undeniable milestone on the Rangers ongoing creative journey.
Since Steep Canyon Rangers came together in 2000, they have developed a remarkable catalog of original music that links them to the past while also demonstrating their ambitious intent to bring string-based music into contemporary relevance. As they approach their second decade, Steep Canyon Rangers are still moving forward, searching for new horizons and musical vistas.

New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters In 1986 a group of musicians from the Galax, VA area formed a new band. The New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters took their name, in part from the original Bogtrotters of the 1930's also because band leader Dennis Hall lives on Ballards Branch. Dennis' home is very close to the home of Uncle Eck Dunford who played fiddle in the original band. The other members of the original Bogtrotters were Uncle Wade Ward, his brother, Davy Crockett Ward, and nephew Fields Ward, and Doctor Davis. They won the very first fiddlers Convention in Galax setting a precedence for all that follow in their footsteps. The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters continue to play in the traditional Appalachian string-band style often playing for square dances around the region. Rounding out the Bogtrotters lineup are: Eddie Bond on Fiddle,Dennis Hall on Guitar, Josh Ellis on Clawhammer Banjo, Bonnie Bond on Bass and Caroline Noel Beverley on Mandolin. Old time music is alive and well, and continues to attract fans of all ages. The New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters remain a driving force in carrying the traditional music of the Virginia/Carolina Blue Ridge into the new millennium.
