Burning Bridget Cleary by Allison Gregory
Ladykillers' Productions, in association with Capitol Hill Arts Center, presents Allison Gregory's haunting drama, Burning Bridget Cleary, directed by Sheila Daniels.Burning Bridget Cleary is sponsored by the Mayor's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.
In a remote county of Ireland in 1895, the badly burned body of a young woman is discovered. Believed to be the last witch burning of Western Europe, the mysterious story of Bridget Cleary unfolds in this startling drama. Caught up in web of conflict between unpopular English rule and ancient, mystic beliefs of rural Ireland, Bridget's death becomes a story at once personal and nationalistic. "I was fascinated with the complex political, religious, and socio-economic aspects of the story of Bridget Cleary," says playwright Allison Gregory, "as well as the mythic landscape where the events took place."
The creative team for Burning Bridget Cleary includes: Peter Dylan O'Connor, scenic design; Heather Moore, costume design; Robert Aguilar, lighting design; and Rob Wittmer, sound design/composer. Jodi Briscoe is stage manager.
