Moscow on the Bluff - Concert IV: Pictures at an Exhibition
Mussorgsky's great masterpiece "Pictures at an Exhibition" was originally for piano, and only became widely known after Ravel orchestrated it years after the composer's death. Written as a tribute to the composer's friend, artist Viktor Hartmann, and played here by David Allen Wehr, the popular work is a landmark in musical realism. Prokofieff's gorgeously lyrical Sonata for Flute and Piano is played by PSO Principal Flute Lorna McGhee and Wehr, who also partners PSO Principal Cello Anne Martindale Williams in Rachmaninoff's monumental Sonata, reprising their interpretation from the PSO's 2009 Rachmaninoff Festival.
Before the concert, McGhee visits with David Allen Wehr about her career as one of the world's premier flutists.
