Moscow on the Bluff - Concert III: Tchaikovsky in Italy
Tchaikovsky visited Italy numerous times, and, like many before and after him, fell in love with its sunny warmth, beautiful scenery and deep musical roots. His memory of melodies he heard in Florence suffuses his String Sextet, full of nostalgia and happiness. Shostakovich suffered many ups and downs with the Soviet government; his Piano Quintet served as a redemption after his first fall from grace in the mid-1930's. An immediate popular and critical success, it won the Lenin Prize in 1940 for its emotionalism and power. Near the end of his life, Shostakovich set seven poems by the Russian mystic Alexander Blok for soprano and piano trio, performed here by Sari Gruber and the Duquesne Piano Trio (David Allen Wehr, Charles Stegeman and Adam Liu), music saturated with death and despair.
