The Artist's Voice: West Coast Vernacular
Franklin Sirmans, Head Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art moderates a conversation with Fore artists Sadie Barnette, Noah Davis and Brenna Youngblood. Noah Davis creates a uniquely personal narrative in his psychologically charged paintings by sourcing imagery from found photographs, art history and autobiographical events. His works may reference racial, social or political issues, but always obliquely, depicting how these issues come to bear on our daily activities and inner lives. Sadie Barnette constructs a visual language system out of sub-culture codes and west coast vernacular, economic formalism, text and abstractions. Brenna Youngblood places figures into a narrative-driven landscape where subjectivity is implied, rather than exploited, in the architectural details and imagined horizons of her dystopic urban scenes. The conversation will focus on the artist's processes, participation in Fore, and the influence west coast culture has had on their work.
