Foreign Body
Tunisian Raja Amari has only made 3 feature-length feature films and a documentary for 15 years. After Red Satin and Secrets, Foreign Body brings yet another stone to a cinema crossed by sensuality and social acuteness. The film covers many topics, including illegal immigration, the place of women in society or radicalization but without trying to push any nail. The cinema of Amari is not demonstration, it is made of sensations, connection to the other and exchanges, soft or violent. Foriegn Body tells of the discovery of new territories for its clandestine heroine, including those, sinuous desires, with the constitution of a troubled and potentially toxic love trio. More than a political message, which is still in the background, the film assumes with its fluid and elegant staging a quest that extends the themes contained in the first two feature films of Raja Amari. The always excellent Hiam Abbass delivers once again a perfect performance alongside the young Sara Hanachi, remarkable chrysalis determined and fragile. Foreign body is a beautiful film very personal, complex and limpid at the same time.
