VISIBLY INVISIBLE : HONORING OUR UNSUNG SHEROES
April 10th, 6pm Doors / 7pm show FREE - RSVP required.
Hosted and Moderated by Julianne R. Johnson
This two-hour program will explore the complex role that Black Women have within their own community and the world at large. We will be honoring several women who are positive role models and inspirations to their community and the world at large. We will celebrate their resilience, perseverance, and commitment to speaking truth to power. They are all powerful warriors fighting for justice and equality for our community.
Visibly Invisible's producer, Shalonda Menefee is an entrepreneur, creative healer & designer and a community champion. She has a deep passion for helping others live up to their full potential and has been committed to empowering women and youth in her community for over 15 years. As a result, she has developed programs, curriculum, workshops, service, and products that promote self-care, spiritual healing and empowerment. Her mission is Creating an Atmosphere of Healing and Empowerment.
A native of Northeast Portland, Shalonda holds three bachelor degrees and has served as a board member for numerous city and community boards in the Portland area. She has worked for various organizations that focus on critical areas of need in our diverse community such as education, housing, economic development, families, and youth.
The program will feature a photography and clothing design presentation featuring African inspired prints that exemplify the strong connection to culture and heritage, as well as an award ceremony recognizing local women community leaders. The program will close with a moderated panel discussion about unsung trailblazing women, past and present, and about how black women can feel empowered and realize their potential in a world that often doesnt acknowledge them.
WE CAN LISTEN (WeCanListen.org)
We Can Listen is funded in part by RACC and The Old Church Concert Hall and strives to build community, educate, and share the positive impact that truly listening to diverse voices can have on us all. Through a cultural intersection of storytelling, film, music, and personal expression we support individuals and grassroots organizations as they raise their voices on compelling social justice issues Portlanders have demonstrated are important to them. We hope these persona stories will reach audiences they havent reached before, and provide the opportunity, for all who hear them, to increase their understanding of issues that require action and awareness in our greater community.
Moderated by Grammy-nominated local recording artist and theatrical performer, Julianne R. Johnson, each We Can Listen event explores a topic of current, social, political, or environmental importance in an atmosphere of trust and respect for both speakers and audience alike.
We Can Listen is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
