Live at Studio5: STEVE RASHID TRIBUTE TO MOSE ALLISON

Jim Cox, bass
Robert Rashid, drums

I decided to become a musician as a child when I first heard Louis Armstrong's trumpet. That sound moved me so profoundly and so mysteriously; it was as if someone had just handed me a great secret and I needed to share it with everyone. Truly, from that moment I never looked back and never questioned my career choice. As a youngster, my subsequent path of musical discoveries wound through many styles and artists. Another early influence was Mose Allison. The clever, bluesy/jazzy pianist, songwriter and singer spoke directly to me through his wry wit and clean melodic sense. In fact, the first song I figured out how to play on the piano from listening to a recording was Mose's "V-8 Ford Blues". Mose's most well known pieces, like "Your Mind's On Vacation" and "Everybody Cryin' Mercy", through his more obscure cuts, made me smile, and made me think. Each was like a little short story with well drawn characters. Years later I would thrill to be in the audience for his performances, and when I was brave enough, chat with him during the breaks (he was soft-spoken and sweet). One of my career highlights was opening for Mose one night at Fedora's (a club on Wells Street with an unfortunately short life -- extra points if you remember that place!). We lost Mose at the age of 89 in 2016, and whenever I get the chance I like to perform his music, partly because it's so much fun, and partly in order to be another person helping insure that Mose's music remains a living expression. I am excited to share his music with our audience at Studio5. I will be joined by three of my all-time favorite people: Don Stiernberg (guitar/mandolin), Jim Cox (bass) and my son, Robert Rashid (drums). Lets celebrate Mose!

Click on the video to hear yours truly perform "Hey Good Lookin'' from a previous Mose tribute.

We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! -SR
