Tales from the "Nightclub Era" of Boston Belly Dance
The 1950s to the 80s was the "Nightclub Era" of belly dance. During this time you could see belly dancing and live music seven nights a week.
Because of the similarities in culture and cuisine, the Armenian, Greek, and Lebanese communities mingled at each others' clubs and restaurants Boston became a melting pot of eastern Mediterranean music and, ironically - considering its puritanical reputation - the city became a national hot spot for belly dance.
In this presentation, Amy Smith will share highlights of her research on Boston's belly dance history, as well as the "Aziza!" documentary project.
