Metro Mushroom Farming
This is a hands-on workshop where you will learn how to grow edible mushrooms almost anywhere: around your vegetable garden, in a small woodlot, in the cramped backyard of a triple-decker, or even in your basement. The focus will be on shiitake, but wine cap, as well as elm and other oyster mushroom varieties will also be covered.
* PART ONE of the workshop will discuss the biology & physiology of mushrooms, and
* PART TWO will be a hands on inoculation of fresh oak logs with shiitake spawn (mycelia). Over time, the mycelia colonize and 'digest' the log, converting its nutrients into tasty edible mushroom 'flushes' or blooms. It's a wonder to witness, and the periodic flushings repeat for several years.
The eight logs that we inoculate during PART TWO of the workshop will be available for sale at the end of the class for between $20 - 40, depending on size. If you register for the class, and if you'd like to reserve a log now (first come, first served), visit Fungi4-18@AgHall.com and leave your name & contact information.
The workshop will be held at Agricultural Hall, 245 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain, from 9:30 - 11:30am.
