Native Bees -- Open Your World (and Your Home) to Our Super-Pollenators
Urban environments support a high diversity of native bee species. But where are they living and what are they eating? In this two-part workshop, you will: 1) Learn all about the biology of native bees and why they are important pollinators. We'll dive into the city lifestyles of bees and the strategies they employ to be successful in these anthropogenic landscapes. 2) In the second part of the workshop, you will learn how to create nesting habitat for cavity- and ground-nesting bees. I will perform a demonstration showing you how to build a nesting block for bees, after which you will have the chance to build and leave with a mason bee home. Please bring an empty tin can from 4-7 inches deep. (Why? You'll find out...) This workshop will extend your interest in backyard pollinators and equip you with the knowledge essential to supporting populations of native bees.
Instructor Nick Dorian is a first-year PhD student at Tufts University. He studies native cellophane bees and the impact of environmental change on their population dynamics. (Talk about FASCINATING, see more about cellophane bees here; https://www.sharpeatmanguides.com/cellophane-bees). When not in the field, Nick can be found photographing birds, scattering native plant seeds, and trying to bake the perfect English muffin.
