Labor 101: Nonprofits and Volunteers, Contractors, and Employees + Legal Clinic
Do labor laws around employees, volunteers, interns and contractors keep you up at night? You are not alone. Nonprofit leaders are faced with a complex web of rules and regulations around labor while also juggling day-to-day operations. If you find yourself wondering about your labor practices and whether you're setting yourself up for a legal issue, join us at this workshop.

In this workshop, we'll cover a variety of common stumbling blocks nonprofit leaders encounter when working with employees, volunteers, interns and contractors. Key topics include:

-How do you legally classify someone as an employee, independent contractor, volunteer or intern,
-What legal responsibilities come along with each classification,
-What does it take to bring on my first new hire and how do I hire legally,
-What ongoing payroll requirements do I have as a nonprofit employer,
-What key documents should I have for employees, volunteers, interns and contractors, to help lower my risk exposure, and much more.

Presenter: Christopher McCauley, Staff Attorney, Wayfind

Legal Clinic Description:

Prior to the start of the workshop, we will host a free legal clinic for nonprofits. During the legal clinic, nonprofits will have approximate 30-45 minutes to consult with an attorney about business-related legal matters. For a legal clinic consultation, you must schedule an appointment in advance. Please contact Chris McCauley at chris@wayfindlegal.org to schedule an appointment. Spots are limited!

Schedule:
Legal Clinic - 4-6pm (45 minute appointments)
Dinner - 5:30-6pm
Training - 6-8pm

South King County:

This training is part of our South King County Nonprofit Legal Training Series and is intended for residents of S. King County and organizations that serve S. King County residents. Registration is limited to S. King County participants. This training is sponsored by the Seattle Foundation and City of Kent and is a partnership of Wayfind and the Nonprofit Assistance Center.
