BookPeople presents Jesmyn Ward
BookPeople is honored to host 2-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward for the paperback release of SING, UNBURIED, SING.
The winner of the National Book Award, a finalist for the Kirkus Prize and Andrew Carnegie Medal, and a New York Times bestseller, this majestic, stirring, and widely lauded novel from two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward is the archetypal and timeless story of a family on a journey through Mississippi.
Drawing on two strong literary traditions, Ward's great inspirations are William Faulkner and Toni Morrison, specifically AS I LAY DYING, a road novel through Mississippi's past, and BELOVED, whose ghosts reveal the suffering of slavery and its aftermath. In her third novel, set in a fictionalized version of her Mississippi hometown, Ward aims just as high, bringing these traditions into the present with an ill-fated road trip and the lingering ghosts of two black teenage boys. One was killed by a racist peer; the other the victim of a mercy killing at Mississippi's infamous Parchman Farm (now the Mississippi State Penitentiary) in the 1940s.
SING, UNBURIED, SING grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family.
Tickets for this event are $20 and include a paperback copy of SING, UNBURIED, SING.
