Marimba Cabaret: Portland Pride
What's a marimba? Like a xylophone, but bigger and more fabulous -- just like Brian.
Brian Calhoon's Marimba Cabaret is an evening of songs and stories featuring musical theater, pop hits and classical covers re-imagined for marimba, vibraphone and voice. Directed and accompanied by percussionist Greg Jukes, Brian will sing, play marimba, confess, and (at times) stand 7-feet tall. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and sing along, theres something for everyone in this dynamic, heartfelt evening.
See what happens when a classically-trained percussionist with a love of theater --and killer shoes-- puts on a show. Brian finally came out of the musical closet and embraced his eclectic tastes in music. Recent shows feature covers from Broadway legends Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Tom Kitt, and Stephen Schwartz next to pop icons like Adele, Whitney Houston, Alanis Morissette, Radiohead and Outkast -- with a little Disney princess mash-up for good measure.
Brian Calhoon combines his experience as a percussionist and vocalist to perform a varied collection of music for marimba and his voice. In 2013, Brian made his stiletto debut as marimba soloist with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus during the Pride concert's Candelabra Cantata, opposite "Liberace" (Chad Weirick) in a battle of dueling keyboards.
Director and accompanist Greg Jukes is a percussionist and narrator who creates work that brings together music, acting, and dance in innovative ways. He is a founding member of The Fourth Wall, an internationally touring hybrid arts ensemble in which musicians are also actors and dancers.
What Others Are Saying "Such an imaginative concept, and exceptionally executed -- a fabulous time!"
"One of the best shows I've seen in Boston -- and I've seen a lot!"
"It's fun, unexpected, inventive, full of heart, and well done."
