Beautiful River: American Hymns, Folksongs & Spirituals
Great River Chorale will present an unforgettable concert of familiar and not-so-familiar American folksongs, hymns, gospel songs and African-American spirituals from our country's early years. You will hear arrangements of the Appalachian folksong "Bright Morning Stars," the Shaker hymn "Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten," J. K. Alwood's gospel song "Unclouded Day," and "Beautiful River," a lush arrangement of the Rev. Robert Lowry's hymn "Shall We Gather at the River." Among the African-American spirituals to be performed are Stacey V. Gibbs dynamic arrangement of "Ezekiel" for double choir, "Walk Together, Children" and "We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace" arranged by Moses Hogan, and "Peace like a River" arranged by Mack Wilberg. Also on the program are arrangements of the American folksongs "Home on the Range" and "Red River Valley," as well as two pieces by 19th-century American composer Stephen Foster, "Camptown Races" and "Hard Times Come Again No More."
