Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Sheroes ! Womens History Month 2018 Jazz Celebrations
The main problem in the public perception of women in jazz is not a resistance to their potential future roles, but a failure to recognize the profound impact those musicians have already had on the game.- Janis Stockhouse, co-author of Women Jazz Musicians: Conversations with Twenty One Musicians (IU Press) and Band Director at Bloomington HighSchool North
Well have for the concert: Jamie Baum flute -www.jamiebaum.com Leni Stern guitar www.lenistern.com Jen Siukola trumpet - www.jensiukola.com Janiece jaffe vocals www.janiecejaffe.com Monika Herzig piano www.monikaherzigcom Bethany Robinson bass Hannah Johnson drums
SHEROES is a brilliant project involving some of my favorite musicians, spearheaded by Monika Herzig. It is soulful and thoughtful. I especially love their take on Aint No Mountain High Enough it captures the spirit of the group because there is no stopping great artists from making great music, as demonstrated on this stellar recording. Vast knowledge; boundless, focused energy and talent; generosity of spirit; cheerful and outgoing personality, and can-do attitude which benefits all whose lives she has touched, Monika Herzig is our Jazz Hero. - The Jazz Journalists Accociation, 2015
Leni Sterns success as a jazz guitarist (awarded Gibson Guitars Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year Award five consecutive years) was no reason to rest on her laurels. Early on she led bands supported by heavyweights, the only ones who could support her big sound and strong melodies (Dennis Chambers, Bill Frisell, Michael Brecker, Paul Motian).
Monika Herzig (piano) recently signed with Whaling City Sounds and the second release SHEroes is set for release March 23, 2018 featuring female instrumental leaders such as Leni Stern, Jamie Baum, Ingrid Jensen, Ada Rovatti, Mayra Casales and more. She was also named the 2015 Jazz Journalist Assoication Jazz Hero for the city of Bloomington and is the author of David Baker A Legacy in Music (IU Press, 2011) and Experiencing Chick Corea: A Listeners Companion (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017). She is a Casio Artist.
Hannah Johnson (drums) is from Wisconsin and currently pursuing a degree in jazz studies at Indiana University where she is a member of numerous ensembles and a member of Steve Houghtons studio.
Bethany Robinson (bass) is from Kokomo, IN. In 2014-2015, she was named Indiana Jazz Educator of the Year, by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation, and in 2015 was named Noblesville Teacher of the Year, for Noblesville Schools. Currently, she also serves as President of the Indiana Jazz Educators Association, where she created All-District Jazz Band in 2015.
Jen Siukola (trumpet) holds a doctorate in trumpet performance/music theory and composition and has been actively performing, teaching, and writing. Her debut album Lighthouse Reverie, which featured all original compositions, was released in June of 2017. It reached #2 on the Roots Music Jazz Chart, #70 on the Jazz Week Chart, and has received excellent reviews.
