Next to Kin
Better to stay alive," I said. "At least while there's a chance to get free." -Kindred
We have focused on this theme to promote the belief that Black women have the tools and capacity to survive even the most turbulent of times, that we indeed make it to the "future". That despite systemic attempts to break and oppress Black women, we have the innate ability to not only survive but thrive, using our creative genius.
The set up is to work with 6 playwrights to use the work of Octavia Butler to inspire a one act 10-minute play. Each playwright will work with a Director and a community dramaturge to develop the work. The play development and the festival will be a part of a variety of community engagement and multidisciplinary experiences for women and girls in our community. We are interested in redesigning models of theatre that work in our celebration and uplift our traditions and cultures.
