Student Advocacy Center Presents: Telling Tales Out of School
The Student Advocacy Center presents: "Telling Tales Out of School," a live storytelling fundraising event. Come and celebrate the art and craft of live storytelling, while supporting the Student Advocacy Center and its work ensuring our most vulnerable students stay in school and realize their rights to a quality public education.
Friday, May 4 at Washtenaw Community College's Towsley Auditorium in the Morris Lawrence Building, 4800 E. Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor.
Mingling starts at 6:30 p.m. Load up on 50-50 raffle tickets, get your photo taken at our "photobooth" and connect with old and new friends.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
The show starts promptly at 7:30 and ends at 9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $25 (or more if you'd like to make a bigger gift to SAC). High school and college students: $10. (At the door, tickets will be $30 for general admission and $10 for students.)
This a powerful evening where new and experienced storytellers come together to inspire, challenge, and create community.
We are excited to welcome the Lincoln High School Choir for a special performance and several student storytellers with powerful stories.
Our storytellers include: - Ramone Williams is a formerly homeless EMU grad whose story inspired $40,000 in pledges to the school's program that supports homeless college students (MAGIC). Born and raised in Flint, Ramone is a spoken word artist who has been auditioning for films in the area. He would love to travel the world someday, acting, and still hasn't given up on his dream of being a professional wrestler.
- SAC Executive Director Peri Stone-Palmquist joins Theresa Bassett and her son Charlie Bassett-Kennedy to tell their story of fighting for an education. Theresa is a teacher, social worker and short order cook in her most important job as parent to her kids. Charles Bassett-Kennedy is a former waterpolo player and orchestra member, as well as a high school graduate who hopes to pursue a career either as an EMT or underwater welder.
- Jessica Decky Alexander is a professor of applied theatre and the Director of Academic Engagement Programs under Engage @ EMU. Decky has spent the past 20 plus years since graduate school in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Area. Both as both a performer and as a faculty member, Decky has used the medium of performance to give voice to underheard voices and communities. At Telling Tales, she is performing the story of one of our Detroit clients, who recently graduated.
- Brittney Barros is a social work major at Eastern Michigan University who is passionate about advocating for at-risk youth. She is also a board member for Student Advocacy Center. Brittneys sister Serenity is an 8th grade wrestler, swimmer, and track runner who is dedicated to sports and a healthy lifestyle.
- Max McNally is student at Lincoln High School, interested in community service. He has been active in our Youth Action Michigan - Ypsilanti chapter and represented SAC at a national Dignity In Schools Conference.
- Marquan Kane is a senior at Pioneer High School.
Our co-hosts include Gordie Wykes, a Student Advocacy Center mentor and advocate known everywhere as the life of the party, and Patti Smith, a big-hearted and passionate teacher, author, local celebrity and story-teller known for her humor and candor.

The Student Advocacy Center of Michigan is a unique organization with a proud, 40-year history of helping vulnerable students stay in school or get back into school. There is no other organization like us in Michigan. Our services include youth-driven education advocacy and support, a statewide Student Rights Helpline, an evidence-based academic mentoring program, an in-home program addressing chronic absenteeism in elementary students, and a leadership after-school program called Youth Action Michigan. We are particularly focused on students experiencing foster care, homelessness, mental illness and the negative impacts of harsh school discipline. Many of our referrals come straight from schools and other community partners.
Please see our website for more information at: www.studentadvocacycenter.org.
Note: Tickets will be available at the door by check, cash and credit card. Tickets bought on-site $30, rather than $25.
