From the New Look to the Mod Era: a Retrospective Look at Mid-20th Century Fashion
Did you know there is an amazing resource for designers and textile artists here in Seattle? And you have full access on line at no charge, and can request to see specific pieces in person by appointment? The Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington is one of the best kept secrets here in Seattle, and they have an amazing archive of costumes, textiles, books, and catalogs from the 1800 -1900's. The vast collection includes vintage Christian Dior pieces from the New Look he launched in 1947 to his bright graphic printed dress in 1967, plus evening dresses like the one Norman Norell designed that was worn by Lauren Bacall and in the February issue of Vogue in 1950, and a black hand beaded cocktail dress from 1960 that was designed by Givenchy which would have been perfect for Audrey Hepburn.
Judy Sourakli and Rachel Faust who are curators at the Henry Art Museum will start the evening off by showing you how to access and navigate the database. Then Agnes Gawne, who is a Fashion Historian at the New York Academy of Design, will take you thru 15 vintage garments that span the New Look to the Mod Era, and discuss the garments and the events of the time and how they influenced the designs. You can walk right up to the garments that will be on display to view them, but no food or drink is allowed due to the fragile nature of the pieces. Due to space limitations there is only room for 25 attendees. 6:30 7:00 PM check in and mingle with your colleagues and look at the displays 7:00 8:30 PM Presentation
