In Conversation with Susan Whitfield and Peter Sellars - Silk, Slaves and Stupas: Culture in Motion on the Silk Road
In her book "Silk, Slaves and Stupas: Material Culture of the Silk Road," author Susan Whitfield tells the stories of ten very different objects--a delicate pair of earrings, a hoard of Kushan coins, a Hellenistic glass bowl, among others--found along the ancient trading routes of Afro-Eurasia. In this afternoon program, Whitfield is joined by renowned theater director Peter Sellars for a fascinating conversation about what these objects tell us about the diversity of people and cultures that traveled the Silk Road. Sellars' own work has been informed by extensive travels in Dunhuang, China, where cave paintings and artifacts provide valuable insights into daily life in premodern China and the religions and languages of the Silk Road. A book signing follows the talk.
NOTE: This program is sold out. The Huntington will form a standby line at 1:30 pm. After ticketed guests have been seated, we will fill empty seats with guests waiting stand-by.
