The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc in Concert
This wildly popular band of master Nordic musicians, a fiddle trio from Norway, Sweden and the Shetland Islands make their first appearance in Port Townsend! Known for clever arrangements, using the fiddles to create bass lines and riffs, the trio leaves the listener wondering how three fiddles can generate such amazing sound.
Performing together as The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, Olav LuksengÄrd Mjelva (Norway), Anders Hall (Sweden) and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands), each a master within their respective tradition, weave these traditions together to form a unique and fresh sound, that is both invigorating and innovative. Augmenting the familiar fiddle with the sound of viola, octave fiddle, and the ornate and unusual hardanger fiddle, these three musicians trade off melodies and harmonies, creating their trademark full sound and mischievous rhythms.
To date, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc has toured not only in the Nordic countries but in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland and across mainland Europe captivating audiences along the way. 2016 saw the release of their eagerly awaited second album, "Deliverance", the follow up to their debut album released in September 2011 to great critical acclaim.
Olav Mjelva is no stranger to the Northwest. He has performed and taught in the Pacific Northwest multiple times. Beginning to play the fiddle as a child, Olav later branched out to play the hardingfele, which he uses in the trio. He is sought after as performer, studio musician, teacher, and dance fiddler. A member of multiple groups, Olav has received the Spelemannsprisen, the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy for his debut solo album, and was the Norwegian Folk Musician of the Year in 2013.
Kevin Henderson is regarded as one of Shetland's finest fiddle players. He began playing at the age of 9, and a year later was studying with the late, great Willie Hunter, perhaps Shetlands finest fiddler of our time. He is a founding member of the powerhouse Shetland band, Fiddlers Bid, and is a member of the legendary Boys of Lough. Needless to say, Kevin is very active performing, as well as teaching.
Anders Hall is from HĂ€lsingland,Sweden. He is multi-instrumental, playing fiddle, viola, and hardanger fiddle. Not only is he well versed in Swedish traditional music, but he also studied at the famed Ole Bull Academy in Voss, Norway. As a result, he is also well versed in Norwegian traditions. He strives to fit together old traditions with innovative ideas and expression, which have a unique way of engaging the listener.
Says Folkworld, "On the evidence to hand, pure fiddle doesn't get much better than The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc."
It's true! Don't believe it? Come to the show and find out why this trio is so in demand.
