For over thirty years, three women Shirley, Carlene and Ruby have languished in Missouri State prison under extreme and unjustly severe sentences for killing or participating in the death of their abusive husbands. Denied the opportunity to enter their abuse at the hands of their husbands into evidence during trial, each of the women now represents a system broken by outdated and media-sensationalized stereotypes, as well as an all-male parole board. When shifting sensibilities and a greater understanding of the "battered" syndrome change legal practices in 2000, Missouri's Governor signs a new clemency law demanding the parole board reevaluate each woman's case. But nothing comes easy to the women who have been abused twice, first by their husbands who promised to keep them safe and then again by the notoriously secretive group of men who control their fate. A beacon of hope arrives when a groundbreaking decision creates the Missouri Battered Women's Coalition. Once this group of impassioned lawyers grasps the details of each woman's fate, they immediately begin a decade and a half long quest to secure their freedom. Now, Shirley, Carlene and Ruby become active partners in directing their own destiny, searching for freedom, forgiveness and ultimately fairness as they learn to finally fight back against becoming "The Perfect Victim".
