Lakewood Memorial Chapel Tours & Open House
Do not miss your opportunity to tour the one-of-a-kind, Byzantine-style Lakewood Memorial Chapel, an architectural treasure located here in Minneapolis. At this open house-style event on Sunday, March 25, Lakewood tour guides will share the Chapel's unique history and architectural detail in the upper level of the building, starting at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Afterward, you can explore the Chapel lower level on your own, where you will find historic exhibits, the original columbarium room, and the original and modern crematories. The Chapel will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day.
Dedicated in 1910, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones. It features a 65-foot high dome ringed with stained glass windows and 12 mosaic angels. The Chapels mosaic interior, created by New York designer Charles Lamb, is made up of more than 10 million mosaic pieces of marble, colored stone and glass fused with gold and silver. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Chapel is one of the finest examples of Byzantine Revival architecture with mosaic interior in the country.
A $5 donation is appreciated and goes toward Lakewood's Perpetual Care Fund, which helps ensure the upkeep of Lakewood's grounds for generations to come. Questions?
