SCHWARTZ DYNASTY presented by AJC SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2006
SCHWARTZ DYNASTY 5:15 PM
Director: Shmuel Hasfarei and Amir Hasfarei Country/Year: Israel, 2004 Language: Hebrew & Russian w/subtitles Running Time: 104 min. Format: 35mm
This tragicomedy centers on two women of different generations with a common mission in life: to find space in a Jewish cemetery. Miriam Schwartz struggles for the right to be buried beside her husband, the former head of a religious council who committed suicide. Anna is a young, Russian beauty who wants to fulfill her father's dying wish to be buried in the same cemetery. Both are up against an inflexible town council with bureaucratic procedures, the intolerance of Russian immigrants, and religious narrow-mindedness. The men in their families - a conniving West Bank settler, a pothead grandson nor a Russian surgeon embittered by his work as the town butcher - can help them. Not even the Rabbi (Dov Navon, last seen in NINA'S TRAGEDIES, SJFF 2005). The odds are more than stacked against these heroines, but the resolution is as unexpectedly delightful as it is powerfully moving.
