DIFFERENT DANCES: a Mind-Body Connection Experiment
All to the improvised, LIVE DJ accompaniment of Henry Chenevert-- Diana (of Sans Limites Dance) will guide participants through a BODY AWARENESS and MINDFULNESS MOVEMENT EXPERIENCE.
DESCRIPTION OF CLASS by Diana (of Sans Limites Dance):
"Fusing my formal DANCE training, informal improvisational practices, and undergraduate STUDIES in DANCE THERAPY and PSYCHOLOGY -- I will guide participants through a course that will strengthen their Mind-Body Connection.
Inspired by Duncan's belief in the "solar plexus" being the body's primary source of strength -- my structured-improvisational classes will include both FREE-FLOW MOVEMENT and PHYSICAL CONDITIONING EXERCISES focused on initiating and carrying movement from the ABDOMINALS, GLUTEUS and QUADS.
Realizing the importance of both the ACTIVE and PASSIVE BODY, I focus on increasing both MUSCLE STRENGTH and MUSCLE FLEXIBILITY via movement exercises that demand muscle engagement and muscle relaxation.
In each class, I will direct participants to MEMORIZE and EXECUTE phrase-work that I create extemporaneously. This movement will be the manifestation of my life-long training in various dance forms like MODERN, BALLET, FLAMENCO, BALLROOM/LATIN (formal and street styles), other NYC STREET STYLES, LABAN MOVEMENT STUDIES and IMPROVISATIONAL PRACTICES.
At the end of class, participants have the option of performing a movement score that requires them to fuse the choreography they just learned with pedestrian movement, gestures, and spoken word prompts. This score will be recorded and publicly archived on the INSTAGRAM handle @SansLimitesDance with the hashtag #LifeTimeImprovChallenge.
*students have the option of not being part of the video
**INSPIRED BY CREATIVE ARTS THERAPY PRACTICES, participants are encouraged to bring writing materials (like looseleaf and pencils), drawing materials (like sketch paper and colored pencils -- no paints, markers or tools that can stain), musical instruments and any other creative materials that you are currently working on in your own private practice. ***
