GAYming the System: Tax Tools for Creative Queers (& Allies)
Let's be real: Tax law is written, on the whole, to uphold the white patriarchy, and its benefits are overwhelmingly concentrated away from marginalized communities. Artists and other creative professionals, in particular, are underserved by this system. Until we can radically remake our economy, we've got to help each other navigate it. Bottom-line: You deserve the money, let's figure out how to make sure you get it.
Taught through the lens of queer politics, this workshop aims to introduce creative queers (& LGBTQ+ allies) to: + Filing taxes as a creative professional + Common tax write-offs specific to artists + What records to keep, and easy ways to do it + Building alternative economies
A note on accessibility: SooVAC's entrance has a ramp, and the gallery space and bathrooms are ADA compliant.
This Artist Education workshop series invites artists on the edge of culture to teach their peers about the personal and professional skills theyve developed to thrive on the margins. The program a unique collaboration between Patricks Cabaret, Pangea World Theater, and Soo Visual Arts Center is intended to create collaborative space for artists to share their skills with fellow artists and organizers, to strengthen relationships and build resilience, and to provide opportunities for artists to put their knowledges to work.
This workshop is led by Scott Artley, the Executive Artistic Director of Patricks Cabaret. Since joining the organization in 2014 as Performing Arts Curator, he has developed new curatorial platforms, developed new programs, and stewarded a broad portfolio of community partnerships. In January 2016 he was named the organization's Executive Artistic Director, overseeing its successful transition from a brick and mortar venue to an community-engaged mobile resource for artists on the edge of culture.
