WIA- Women's History Month
March is celebrated worldwide as Women's History Month, to highlight the contributions of women to the society. The Women in Architecture Committee of AIA Orange County celebrates the month by documenting the accomplishments of such women in Wikipedia. Last year, we created pages for Lois Gottlieb and Elsa Leviseur and supplemented information about Lutah Maria Riggs. At AIA Orange County, we are extremely fortunate to have contemporary women in architecture who contribute significantly to the profession and serve as role models. It is as important to document the achievements of contemporary women even as we catch up with the women previously pushed aside when documenting hisstory. We have added a page in Wikipedia for Betsey Dougherty to document her contributions to the field of architecture. This year, let's take it a step ahead. Join us on March 8th, Thursday at 5:30 pm, as we talk about the importance of writing Women in Wikipedia. Antoinette LaFarge, Professor of Art at UC Irvine joins us a special guest at this year's event. Under the Women in Red project, she has conducted many successful edit-a-thons to write women in Wikipedia. At the event, we will be documenting a list of women that you intend on writing about. Even though writing a Wikipedia page may seem daunting, rest assured we will provide enough material instruction and guidelines to write and edit... Before the event, research whom you want to write about, as it makes it easier for us to document our progress in the months to come. Although March is officially Womens History month, HER-story will be written every day of the year until we have properly acknowledged all of the forgotten stories. March is officially Women's History Month, but HER-story will be written every day of the year until we are done sharing all the forgotten stories. I hope to see you at the AIA Orange County office on March 8th, Thursday at 5:30 pm for an evening of writing, editing, and networking. As always, this event is open to everyone, regardless of gender.
Thank you for all for your continued support of Women in Architecture Committee. Meghana Joshi Chair, Women in Architecture Committee AIA Orange County
