JimmyJo & The Jumbol'Ayuhs
Cajun music will be served up from the stage and bowls of gumbo will be served at intermission when JimmyJo & The JumbolAyuhs play in concert at the Phippsburg Congregational Church on Saturday, April 28, at 7:00 p.m.
The Maine-based band offers music from Cajun Louisiana with a Downeast accent. With all members contributing to five part vocal harmonies, the ensemble features Jim Joseph on accordion and fiddle, Pam Weeks on fiddle, Bill Olson on guitar, Elna Joseph on bass, and Kit Garovoy on percussion.
Band co-founder Jim Joseph notes the states deep connection to this music, observing that the original Acadians from Nova Scotia migrated to Maine and Louisiana: After 300 years, we still stay connected culturally.
JimmyJo and the Jumbol'Ayuhs play Cajun "dance hall" music as it has evolved into the 20th and 21st centuries. Staying true to the tradition, the bands repertoire includes tunes by Dewey Balfa, Octa Clark, Canray Fontenot, Dennis McGee, and Amédé Ardoin. Recognizing that the music is a continuing tradition, they also play many modern Cajun songs, including original numbers penned by band members and other peers who are a part of the present-day Cajun scene, including Michael Doucet, Mark and Ann Savoy, and David Greely. In addition to lively two-steps and waltzes, the program will also include Swamp Pop and Zydeco numbers. Even though its a concert setting, the band encourages anyone to dance in the aisles if the spirit moves them.
The band has played at leading Cajun/Zydeco and "roots" and folk festivals in the northeast, including Bayou and Brooklyn, Strawberry Park, Falcon Ridge Folk Fest; and ones presented by New England Folk Festival Association, and Downeast Friends of the Folk Arts.
As Joseph's other passion is cooking, he will also offer bowls of gumbo to be served at intermission.
The show will be performed at the historic 1802 Phippsburg Congregational Church situated on the banks of the Kennebec. The church is located at 10 Church Lane (at Parker Head Rd.) in Phippsburg. Tickets are available at the door. Admission is $15; students $8. $12 advance tickets available at BrownPaperTickets.com Children under 8 are admitted free.
