Iolanthe
Take a trip from 1880s England to Fairyland this Spring! Iolanthe is not your average fairy tale. Although graceful and spritely, these fairies are not to be trifled with.
The show opens with three fairies (Leila, Celia, and Fleta) discussing Iolanthes banishment. After some coaxing, the fairy queen relents and summons Iolanthe, who introduces her half fairy (from the waist down) son Strephon. Strephon is to be married to Phyllis, but the Lord Chancellor and other peers all vie for her affections, especially Lord Tolloller and Lord Mountararat. When Phyllis sees Strephon talking to Iolanthe, she assumes he is being unfaithful and breaks the engagement. Chaos ensues, pitting the fairies against the peers, resulting in classic Gilbert and Sullivan satire.
Iolanthe has a depth that is unseen in most other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Despite many of the characters being fairies, all the characters portray real human emotions, conflicts, and motives. If you are looking for a little magic, a little humor, and a lot of humanity, this is a production you will not want to miss!
