Jawahir Middle Eastern Music Ensemble
Jawahir Middle Eastern Music Ensemble performs classical and popular Arabic and Turkish music of the 17th to the 21st centuries. Former members of Alhan Middle Eastern Music Ensemble Tom Kovacevic and Madeleine Hanna will be joined by Dorothy Barker to present a delightful concert of Middle Eastern vocal and instrumental music. The program will be drawn from the jewels of Arabic traditional and popular song, and interspersed with instrumental classics, both old and new. Featured will be composers Mohammed Abd al Wahab and Farid al Atrash and songs from Arabic films sung by the great Lebanese singer Sabah.
Jawahir means jewels in Arabic. The group endeavors to celebrate Arabic vocal music and its poetry, at the heart of Arabic music, and to uncover and share some of the rich variety of musical traditions from the Middle East.

Part of Mayo Street Arts International Heritage Series. Based on the idea that music is inherent to strengthening community in cultures around the world, the series will celebrate regional music and dance traditions.
