USHPIZIN (HOLY GUESTS) presented by AJC SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2006
USHPIZIN (HOLY GUESTS) 6:30 PM
Director: Giddi Dar Country/Year: Israel, 2004 Language: Yiddish & Hebrew w/subtitles Running Time: 90 min. Format: 35mm As the festive holiday of Succoth approaches, big-hearted Moshe (played by screenwriter Shuli Rand), a devoutly religious man, finds himself broke and, thus, unable to afford his family's move to the Succah "a temporary dwelling to commemorate the holiday " as well as the ritual plants upon which observant Jews are commanded to make blessings. To the childless Moshe and wife Malli (played by his real spouse and cowriter, Michal Rand), the fact that they cannot afford the ritual citron, considered a blessing for having male children, is particularly devastating. Praying for a miracle, an anonymous charitable gift arrives enabling Moshe to purchase a citron, believed to be the most perfect in all of Jerusalem. To further their struggles, two suspicious strangers with criminal pasts also appear on their doorstep. The New York Times calls USHPIZIN "groundbreaking" because it is the first film written and performed by, set and filmed entirely within the insular realm of Jerusalem's Mea Shearim and its Hasidic community. Radically different than Boaz Yakin's "A Price Above Rubies" and Amos Gitai's "Kadosh" (SJFF 2000), USHPIZIN delivers a revelatory and warmhearted look at ultra-Orthodox learning, living and loving in modern-day Israel.
