Highway Kind: A Celebration of Townes Van Zandt
Portland, Maine based musician Seth Warner and his band with several special guests will present Highway Kind: A celebration of Townes Van Zandt, an evening full of the songs and stories from the life of this late, legendary and iconic Texas singer-songwriter at The Dance Hall.
While finding success as a performing singer-songwriter was elusive and fraught with challenges, many of which were his own making Townes Van Zandts songs touched and influenced many and still do to this day. Emmylou Harris, The Cowboy Junkies, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Nanci Griffiths, Steve Earle are just a few of countless artists that have covered Van Zandt's songs and specifically pointed to him as an inspiration. While not being exactly auto-biographical, Van Zandt's better-known songs often deal with darkness and feature lonely, troubled characters infused with themes of leaving, life on the road and love left behind. Having toured as a soloist nearly constantly during his career and preferring dive bars to concert halls, Townes was a gifted and able performer, mixing in talking blues, choice upbeat covers and practicing his jokes and one liners with the audiences all along the way.
Joining Seth Warner at The Dance Hall will be Andy Argondizza electric & acoustic guitar, Duane Edwards - upright bass, Lauren Hastings Genova - violin, Susanne Gerry - vocals and Marty Joyce drums & percussion.
Seth Warner's performances have been described as ethereal by the Portland Press Herald and has appeared on stages as diverse as The Boston Early Music Festival, WGBH radio, a cruise on the Rhine river in Germany and at Joes Pub in New York City. Most recently Seth has been touring his Highway Kind: A celebration of the songs of Townes Van Zandt, the late, great Texas songwriter and performing in a duo with soulful singer, Susanne Gerry. Other highlights from his two decade plus career include performances and collaboration with the Grammy award winning Parker String Quartet and tours with the extraordinary gospel and blues singer, Francine Reed and serving as Executive Producer for several internationally acclaimed classical recordings.
Seth studied with Olav-Chris Henriksen and Hopkinson Smith and greatly benefited from the mentorship of mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Erskine Patches and pianist Frank Glazer. Also enjoying a varied career in arts administration, Seth managed The Olin Arts Center at Bates College for ten years in which he curated several diverse and successful concert series being named as an "Emerging Arts Leader" by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters in 2008. Alongside his performance schedule Seth now serves as the box office manager for the State Theatre and Thompson's Point concert venues in Portland, Maine and teaches lute, guitar and ukulele at Bates. Seth plays handcrafted instruments of Cezar Mateus of Princeton, New Jersey and Bourgeois Guitars which are crafted in Lewiston, Maine.
