Dialogues
KPU String Quartet-in-Residence presents a journey into the human soul through evocative sonic conversations! Ready for a passionate and expressive musical adventure? This concert will take you in new and unexpected directions. One of the most dynamic and exciting world-class ensembles of its generationthe Borealis String Quartetin residence at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), is premiering a unique program that takes audiences on a journey into the human soul through evocative sonic conversations. Dialogues came out of the Quartet's ongoing quest for exploring communicative qualities and connections created through musical expression. It is fascinating to experience our world through sound and musical spirit, said violinist Yuel Yawney. This concert traverses many cultures presenting numerous distinctive sonic dialogues. Comprised of Yuel Yawney, Patricia Shih also on violin, Nikita Pogrebnoy on viola, and Sungyong Lim on cello, the Borealis String Quartet has received international critical acclaim; praised for their fiery performances, passionate style, and refined, musical interpretation. Their latest collaboration transports audiences through distinctive musical dialogues across the spirited landscape of the Central Europe to present day British Columbia. The concert features compositions written especially for the Borealis String Quartet by young Vancouver composers selected from the 1st Annual Canadian Music Centre 2017 Jean Coulthard String Quartet Readings last spring. Five chosen works will be featured expressing a great diversity of musical interaction and content. Two additional works on the program convey the dynamic conversational quality of chamber music: first, the expressive and exuberant String Quartet No. 2 by celebrated Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, and then the beloved Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81 by the famous Czech composer Antonín Dvoák with its spirited folk inspired melodies. The Borealis String Quartet is thrilled to have virtuoso pianist, Marcel Bergmann joining them for this glorious masterpiece.
