Live at Studio5: THE CHICAGO CELLAR BOYS
Andy Schumm - cornet, clarinet, tenor sax John Otto - clarinet, alto sax John Donatowicz - banjo, guitar Paul Asaro - piano, vocals Dave Bock - tuba
Its Valentines week! So skip the teddy bear and give your special someone the gift of time traveling back to the 1920s for an evening of hot jazz at Studio5 with The Chicago Cellar Boys. Were even opening the dance floor, so come, enjoy the music and if you feel like cutting a rug, the floor is all yours.
I cant tell you how excited I am to have this band pay us a visit at Studio5. The Chicago Cellar Boys is a new spinoff of Chicagos legendary Fat Babies, that hot eight-piece 1920s group that plays every week at the Green Mill. The Fat Babies has appeared at Studio5 a couple of times, and each time the crowd goes absolutely nuts for them. Fat Babies cornetist Andy Schumm has recently organized a leaner, quintet version of the group kind of a Fat Babies Slim (hahahaha I am so funny) which has enjoyed a regular Sunday night engagement at the Honky Tonk BBQ in Pilsen this past year. This will mark The Chicago Cellar Boys first show at Studio5. The fellows in this band are deeply committed to authentic performances of hot 1920s and 1930s jazz, and by that I dont mean just playing the repertoire of the era with appropriate tempos, vocabulary, etc., I also mean playing the music with the same passion, fire and daring that the original artists had. In the hands of The Cellar Boys, this nearly century-old music is brand new again, and it balances right on the edge of being dangerous. Hearing it live and up close, one can easily imagine why older generations found this early jazz scandalous. Them damned youngsters! Its like time-traveling, and I cant get enough of it. Its so much fun. And not only will the music be hot, we will open up the dance floor for anyone who cant sit still. BTW, even if you dont want to dance, you know somebody will (Studio5 is housed in a dance center, after all), and watching the hoofers is all part of the fun. Come join us! Ill be the guy grinning.
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! SR
