Nevertheless, She Persisted
In February 2017, Senator Elizabeth Warren read to the Senate Coretta Scott Kings letter opposing Jeff Sessions1986 federal nomination. In declaring the letter on the Senate floor, Warren, like many other women before her, made choices that werent easy and risked a great deal to reputation and well-being. Warren was chastised and given a warning for her behavior, and it is from that warning that Ensemble Lyrae proudly presents Nevertheless, She Persisted. Delving into compositions and poetry by women for women, including a newly commissioned work to be premiered at these concerts, Ensemble Lyrae grapples with questions of gender-equality and feminism, and acknowledges the efforts made by women to change history. Works by Hildegard von Bingen, Lili Boulanger, and Clara Schumann, up to todays Julianna Hall and Jennifer Higdon will be featured. Ensemble Lyrae is also pleased to welcome harpist Alix Raspé as guest artist on this program.
About Ensemble Lyrae Inspired by the natural beauty and brilliance of the constellation Lyra, Ensemble Lyrae brings together five uniquely and highly talented musicians. While each shines as a soloist, together, these women form deep connections in performing duets, trios, and quartets. The pianist and four vocalists of Ensemble Lyrae seek to illuminate musical works often unknown or under-played. They also premiere cutting-edge pieces written specifically for the Ensemble and their remarkable sound. Whether performing in a spacious concert hall or a more intimate salon-style setting at home, these captivating Boston-based musicians enliven the audience's senses, engage their imaginations, and invite them to live in a world of timeless beautiful sound.
