MELTING SIBERIA presented by AJC SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2006
MELTING SIBERIA 4:30 PM
Directors: Ido Haar Country/Year: Israel, 2004 Language: Russian w/subtitles Running Time: 75 min. Format: Beta-PAL
For Marina Haar, the first step in melting the distance between Israel and Siberia is a single phone call. Living happily in Israel, the 57-year old, never knew the identity of her Russian father who abandoned her mother and disappeared into Siberia until her grown-up son Ido, the film's director, asks for permission to locate his grandfather and finds his number in a phonebook. At first, Marina resists the next step of picking up the phone, thinking of what it will mean to her and her elderly mother. But once she decides to make the call, there's no turning back. When they all meet in Russia, a painful journey comes full circle and a void begins to be filled. With a grace and emotional depth that's rarely captured on film, MELTING SIBERIA is about healing the pain of childhood and learning that there is no such thing as too-little-too-late.
