Feb 25: Brazilian!!! Nanny Assis, Wayne Wilentz, Leonardo Lucini
Our February concert is Brazilian, for Carnaval! Nanny Assis will lead a trio playing Brazilian jazz, with DC artists Wayne Wilentz and Leonardo Lucini. Doors open at 6:30 for a vegetarian feast (a gift from your host), and music starts at 7:30. The Casa is a private home: leave your shoes at the door but you may BYOB inside! Tickets are $25 and likely to sell out in advance. 100% of sales goes to the artists. Costumes and masks are welcome!! but not required. Singer, drummer, percussionist, and song-writer Nanny Assis was born in Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, and has lived in NYC for two decades, where he plays top venues including the Blue Note. He is a master of Brazilian Jazz, Afro-Brazilian music and other popular and folkloric sounds from his homeland and In 2011 and 2017 , he was the recipient of the prestigious Brazilian International Press Award Best Singer of the Year.He has recorded three albums: Brazilian Vibes, with Arthur Lipner, Double Rainbow. and Requinte Trio Honey and Air. Wayne Wilentz is a DC area-based pianist, vocalist, and composer specializing in Brazilian music. Born in NYC, Wayne was a member of Skyy for 9 years, received a Gold Record for their LP Skyyline, played with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Coasters and has done many sessions for Thievery Corporation." He teaches at the Washington Conservatory of Music, leads local bands including Cloudburst, and is the musical director for The Capital City Voices, DC's premier jazz choir. Leonardo Lucini is a bassist, producer, composer and educator originally from Rio de Janeiro who has performed and/or recorded with artists such as Nestor Torres, Arturo OFarrill, Alex Acuna, and Chuchito Valdez. Leo lives in the D.C. area and performs with his Brazilian jazz band Origem and leads six Jazz Combos as teacher for the Jazz Band Masterclass network, and lectures and teaches widely, at the Berklee College of Music and many others.
