Virginia López is passionate about her Afro-Cuban heritage  and she expresses that passion through her music.  Like all her creative pursuits, Virginias purpose is to increase public understanding of the range, beauty, and depth of Afro-Cuban culture and music.

Afro-Cuban drumming has been preserved in Cuba by the African descendants, and traditionalists for hundreds of years. Starting in the 1500's, Spain brought over a million Africans to work for no pay at the sugar cane plantations in the island of Cuba. Ever since, Afro-Cuban drumming has been shared, and preserved throughout Cuba.

Afro-Cuban rhythms will continue to be preserved, and continue to evolve for many generations to come.

Recording artist Virginia López is a percussionist, and she will teach Afro-Cuban rhythms on conga drums, in relationship to clave patterns, drums, and bell patterns. Virginia has been teaching song and conga drum rhythms in Portland, Oregon for several decades.

Cuban born (also raised, educated, and indoctrinated) Virginia Lopez is a Yemayá Priestess in the Lucumí tradition.  Amelia Pedroso, ibbaé bayen tonú, initiated Virginia López in 1999, in Havana, Cuba.
All levels are welcomed.
This drumming class is a group class, and space is limited. So register early.
Class will be in the SE area of Portland.
Exact location of the class available when you register for the class.
