10th Anniversary Winter Repertory Season
The evening celebrates the companys commitment to presenting the highest caliber and widest variety of works ranging from elegant, energetic classical works to contemporary dance commenting on todays social conscience, relationships, and personal transitions.
This years program really reflects the growth and evolution of our company, celebrating its roots of our founding collaborators. What makes us a collective are the shared ideas, aesthetics and goals not only of our own dancers, but of those guests who have become extended family in a way. Therefore, the work is more personal, visceral, and most of all unique.
The program opens with the vivacious "Liebesgedicht," choreographed by Stephen Straub (Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Suzanne Farrell Ballet), who has made several works for LTDC since its founding. Created for the Lake Tahoe Music Festival last summer to Mozarts Symphony No. 29, this energetic romp features all the glamour of classical ballet, especially thanks to costume designer Virginia Vogel.
Also returning from last August is Erik Wagners "Bach Double Violin Concerto" with an added adagio movement. Wagners background lends an elegant, contemporary twist to the simplicity of line and undulating score of Bach.
Special guests Red Brick Company, led by dancer/choreographer Nicholas Korkos, presents "Scene Work." Set to the alluring and bittersweet music of 1950's starlet Connie Francis,"Scene Work"finds itself at the various stages of reaction after a relationship ends.Through theatrical vignettes that spark melancholy, five characters, each at a different time in their life, tell their sides of the story.Native San Franciscan Nicholas Korkos has performed with Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Aszure Barton, San Francisco Opera, and the San Francisco Symphony, where he was part of a restaged version ofOn the Townwith the original Broadway revival cast.
Two beloved works return this season. Hannas "Company" (2011) will feature Stephen Straub partnering LTDCs Gabrielle Rodda in the works atmosphere of mystery and suspension. I made this ballet in a very dark time in my life, says Hanna, and its one of the ones I look back on fondly. The ensemble is made up of apprentice dancers who are performing with us the first time, and I feel that this piece was a nice introduction to my choreography for them.
Deborah Lohses "Vivants" (2012) has been staged by original cast member Sierra Walsh. Vivant means to live, says Lohse of the work. I am constantly in awe of the power young women can conjure when they are awake, participating and alive.
The event will also feature a gallery showing, celebrating of photography from the companys first ten years with iconic images from photographers Danielle Hankinson, Jen Schmidt, Kristie Pellegrino, Ambera Dodson and Weidong Yang.
