The Founding Fathers of 1776 who wrote the Declaration of Independence also framed a constitution for the new nation.
Styled The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union , it embodied the principles of the revolution in a blueprint for government. The Articles were the fundamental law of the land from 1781 to 1789. Meanwhile a rather different group of Founding Fathers lobbied hard to replace the Articles with a rather different constitution more to their liking. Their constitution of 1789 is the one we live under today.
Most of us have forgotten--if we ever knew--that there was a first constitution. This course brings it back into historical view. Who were these different Founding Fathers and what were they up to? How were the two constitutions similar and different in intent, content, and consequence? How did each balance the forces of high principle and low politics? Join us in a lively lecture/discussion to explore what the First Constitution was all about, and why it still echoes through our daily lives.
Dick Miller, a retired historian, enjoys taking and giving LLCC courses.
