Your instructor for this course, long-time pilotBob De Vries has this to say about his upcoming course:
"Based in Berlin Germany between 1988 and 1991 I flew through the three air corridors in and out of West Berlin and through out Easter Europe during communist occupation. Some interesting things occurred during this time.
Shortly after the end of World War IIthe capital of Germany, Berlin, was cut off from the rest of Europe by the Communist Iron Curtain. To keep Berlin open, the allied governments claimed their right to maintain an open city of West Berlin. Although the Soviet Union objected, the Western Allies established three corridors for transportation in and out of the city --three road routes that were open after passing East German check points. We also had three air corridors in and out of Berlin. As a captain for Pan American Airlines, I flew in and out through these corridorsuntil the wall came down in 1989.
In this class, I would like to relate the stories of my encounters with the East German Air Force, Soviet Spies and what it was like to raise a family behind the Iron Curtain."
Bob De Vriesattended Long Beach City College and the US Navy Flight School. He was a Lieutenant in theUS Navy, serving in Vietnam flying 2000 hours in a C130 aircraft. He was aCaptain for Pan American and Delta Airlines, logging24,000 hours flight time.
