Tuesdays in the Newsroom Presents How We Got Here: What Drew African-American Families to the Vineyard
Tuesdays in the Newsroom Presents How We Got Here: What Drew African-American Families to the Vineyard

For Black History Month, Tuesdays in the Newsroom will focus on the African-American experience on Marthas Vineyard.

The program will begin with the screening of a new short film shot last summer on the Vineyard by a French production company, followed by a panel featuring three year-round Island residents who spent childhood summers in Oak Bluffs.

Olive Tomlinsons mother was a noted artist, Gretchen Tucker Underwoods father was a judge and Skip Finleys father founded the largest black-owned engineering firm in the country. The three will talk about what attracted their parents to the Island,  describe their memories of growing up and offer insights into the lives of black families in the 1950s and 1960s.

Tuesdays in the Newsroom is a monthly discussion series sponsored by the Vineyard Gazette and held in the newspaper's newsroom in the off-season. The program begins with a short reception with refreshments, followed by the program.

Admission is free for Gazette subscribers and $10 at the door for non-subscribers. Space is limited so advance registration is required.
